Paoli is on the Road To Zero

Paoli is a stop on the Road To Zero. So is Philadelphia and New York, Seattle, Miami and Phoenix. And so are all the cities, towns and villages in between. The Road To Zero Coalition is a group of transportation industry leaders led by the National Safety Council. The group's goal is to drive down car and truck accidents, injuries and fatalities. It's ultimate objective is to reach zero motor vehicle fatalities by 2050.

Most people scoff at the idea of eliminating traffic deaths by 2050 or any other year. But National Safety Council CEO Deborah Hersman isn't deterred by skepticism. She says there was much the same reaction when President John Kennedy proposed in the early 1960s a landing on the moon. She said that idea was also widely dismissed - and then loudly hailed a few short years later when Neil Armstrong stepped on to the moon's surface.

"We lose over 100 people a day on our roadways, and we are not outraged by each one of those deaths," Hersman said. She says all of those fatalities are tragic and preventable. She says that what's needed today is a "commitment of resources, leadership and new technology to get us to zero."

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says that a more than three-decade-long decline in motor vehicle fatalities came to a screeching halt in 2011 and then began to climb. In 2016, the nation saw a 5.6 percent increase in roadway deaths to 37,461.

As we who live near busy interstate highways know, the biggest most dangerous vehicles rolling today are 18-wheelers. Big rigs were an important part of the rise in 2016 fatalities, the NHTSA said, with 4,317 people killed in wrecks involving large commercial trucks.

For those injured in crashes involving a distracted, impaired or otherwise reckless driver, an attorney experienced in personal injury litigation can help you pursue justice and deserved compensation.
